Save Lives! Don’t Text and Drive
In life, there are so many risks and dangers, many of the dangers you can control and many you can’t; however, texting and driving is one that everyone has control over. It seems like there is always something new on the market, whether it’s a faster phone, better looking computer, flatter TV, or even a hotter oven. I personally would have never thought 5 years ago how advanced one world can become in such a short amount of time.
While I was riding in the car with my 16 year old, I realized first hand just how many times her phone beeps, dings and rings while she is making a simple trip to the grocery store, which is just five minutes from home. The amount of social media, texting, calling and talking that is occurring for a 16 year old is unimaginable these days. Being with her in the car for those few moments and realizing the amount of people trying to communicate to her by phone while driving was an unnerving feeling as a parent. Although she did not pick up her phone while she was in the car with me how do I know that she doesn’t pick up her phone while I am not in the car? After the short trip to the store, I once again reminded her of the dangers of using her phone while she was driving. As a parent it is a scary thought to think how a small phone could be such a big distraction. As a father, it only seems obvious that I would remind my 16 year old daughter about the dangers, but do I remind myself enough of the dangers?
Anyone who has a cell phone and a car realizes how easily a cell phone can distract anyone in a car especially a driver no matter how old they are. Lives are taken from too many people each year due to cell phone distraction on the roadways, a reported 3,000 annual teen deaths nationwide from texting and 300,000 injuries. It is time for us all to take a stand and make people aware that it is not acceptable to use a cell phone while operating a vehicle.
It is very important to me that I encourage and try to promote safety while people are driving on the roads. I am proud to sponsor a Save Lives! Don’t Text and Drive campaign for the month of September; I have taken the pledge. I encourage you if you haven’t already to join me in taking the pledge! Remember, texting and driving CAN wait.
