Big Truck Driver Falls Asleep at the Wheel

We all know that driving and sleeping don’t mix. I was reading about a crash of two semi-tractor trailers recently near New Smyrna Beach that occurred at 3:25 a.m.  It was a result of one of the drivers falling asleep behind the wheel. The wreck occurred when Pierre McClain, 38, was driving a refrigerated semi-trailer transporting frozen meat and fell asleep behind the wheel. McClain’s truck slammed into the back of a semi-trailer loaded with fresh onions, driven by Leo Suarez, 56. It is estimated that McClain’s semi was travelling at 70-80 mph when he slammed into the back of Suarez’s semi. The driver that fell asleep, McClain, had to be extricated and airlifted to the hospital. Luckily, Suarez escaped without serious injury. The result may have been much different for Suarez if he had been driving a passenger vehicle. Asleep at the wheel accidents are not uncommon and are extremely dangerous. Each year, fatigued drivers who fall asleep may be responsible for up to 20 percent of all fatal crashes, according to some estimates.
