Changes Coming to Louisiana Car Seat Laws in August
New, more strict car seat laws are scheduled to take effect in Louisiana on August 1. The Louisiana Senate Bill 76, signed into law by Governor John Bel Edwards, is focused on ensuring that children fit in the car seats properly.
New Louisiana Child Safety Seat Law Details:
- Children under age two must be restrained in a rear-facing child safety seat.
- Any child who is at least two years old and has reached the weight or height limit of the rear-facing seat needs to be restrained in a forward-facing restraint safety seat with an internal harness.
- A child at least four years old who have reached the limits for the forward-facing seat must be restrained by a belt-positioning booster seat secured by a seat belt.
- Nine-year-old children who have outgrown the booster seat can use the car’s adult seat belt if it correctly fits their body.
- Children under age 13 must be in a rear seat, when available for proper use.
