New Orleans April 2026 Festival Guide: Safety Tips for Hogs for the Cause and French Quarter Festival
April in New Orleans is something else entirely. Three major festivals are landing back-to-back this month, and hundreds of thousands of people are heading to the city to celebrate. Before you go, take a few minutes to plan ahead. A little preparation goes a long way.
Hogs for the Cause: April 10–11 at UNO Lakefront Arena Festival Grounds
Hogs for the Cause is one of the most beloved events in the city. Over 30,000 people gather at the UNO Lakefront each year for barbecue, live music, and serious fundraising for families facing pediatric brain cancer. It’s a feel-good event with a big heart. It’s also an all-day outdoor festival in Louisiana in April, which means heat is a real factor.
- Drink water constantly. Between the sun, the music, and the food, it’s easy to forget. Set a reminder on your phone if you need to.
- Wear sunscreen and a hat. The Lakefront offers limited shade. Bring both and reapply throughout the day.
- Eat before you drink. The BBQ here is legendary, and it’s easy to get carried away with the beverages first. Food in your system makes a difference.
- Plan your parking and exit strategy early. Getting in and out of the UNO Lakefront area gets crowded fast. Arrive early or use rideshare to avoid traffic headaches.
- Keep an eye on kids. This is an all-ages event, and children 10 and under get in free. Designate a clear meeting spot at the start of the day in case anyone gets separated.
French Quarter Festival: April 16–19 Throughout the French Quarter
French Quarter Festival is the largest free showcase of Louisiana music anywhere in the world. This year’s edition features 302 performances across 20 stages, 70+ food vendors, Grammy-winning headliner PJ Morton, and a brand new riverfront experience at Governor Nicholls Wharf. It’s enormous, and admission is completely free.
A few things to know before you go:
- The festival is fully cashless in 2026. All booths accept major credit cards and digital payments. If you need cash, there’s an exchange station at Jax Lot on 500 Decatur Street.
- Wear comfortable shoes. You’ll cover serious ground moving between stages. Blisters and sore feet are common complaints. Prioritize comfort over style.
- Guard your belongings in tight crowds. Large, free festivals attract pickpockets. Keep your wallet in a front pocket and use a bag that zips.
- Stay hydrated and take breaks. With four days of outdoor programming, fatigue builds up. Find shade when you can, especially in the afternoon.
- Download the French Quarter Festival app. It helps you plan your stage schedule, navigate food options, and avoid bottlenecks between performances.
General Festival Safety Tips for Any Event
A few basics apply no matter which festival you’re attending:
- Keep your phone charged. Bring a portable charger. A dead phone at a crowded festival is a real problem.
- Designate a meeting spot. Pick one before you enter, and agree on it with your group.
- Never drive impaired. Rideshare, taxi, or designate a sober driver before the day starts.
- Know where medical tents are located. Most large festivals have on-site first aid. Find it when you arrive so you’re not searching later.
When the Unexpected Happens at a Festival
Festivals are full of energy, crowds, alcohol, and movement. That combination occasionally leads to real injuries. Slips and falls on wet or uneven surfaces, crowd-related incidents, parking lot accidents, and injuries from inadequate security are more common at large public events than most people realize.
If something happens to you or someone in your group, a few steps matter early. Report the incident to event staff or security right away. Get medical attention, even if the injury seems minor at first. Document the scene with photos if you’re able, and keep any records you receive.
