Cases We Handle in Hammond
Home »
Hammond sits at the crossroads of I-12 and I-55, with US-190 and US-51 carrying local and commercial traffic through Tangipahoa Parish. If you were hurt in Hammond or elsewhere on the Northshore, our Hammond personal injury lawyers can help you understand your rights and what options may be available.
We represent people injured in car accidents, commercial truck crashes, 18-wheeler wrecks, and motorcycle accidents. Big or small, I handle them all™. Depending on the crash, we may review photographs, witness accounts, vehicle information, driver records, maintenance documents, and available insurance coverage.
We also help people injured while working. Our team handles workers' compensation claims and serious industrial and plant accident cases.
For Northshore residents whose work takes them offshore, aboard vessels, or onto navigable waters, our offshore and maritime injury lawyers can review what happened and explain whether Louisiana law, the Jones Act, or another federal maritime law may apply.

Courts Serving Hammond and the Northshore
If your claim requires a lawsuit, the appropriate court depends on where the accident occurred, where the parties are located, and Louisiana's jurisdiction and venue rules.
Hammond is located in Tangipahoa Parish, which is served by the 21st Judicial District Court. The 21st JDC has original jurisdiction over civil and criminal matters in Tangipahoa, Livingston, and St. Helena Parishes. The Tangipahoa Parish Courthouse is located at 110 North Bay Street in Amite.
Hammond City Court, located at 303 East Thomas Street, also handles civil, criminal, traffic, and juvenile matters within its territorial jurisdiction in the Seventh Ward.
For claims connected to St. Tammany Parish, the 22nd Judicial District Court may be relevant. It has original jurisdiction over civil and criminal matters in St. Tammany and Washington Parishes, with the St. Tammany Parish Justice Center located at 701 North Columbia Street in Covington.
You do not have to determine the proper court before calling us. If litigation becomes necessary, we can review the facts and determine where your claim may properly be filed.
What to Do After an Accident in Hammond
Your first priority should be your health and safety. Get necessary medical care and notify law enforcement when Louisiana law requires a crash to be reported.
If you are able to do so safely:
- Take photos or video of the vehicles, roadway, damage, traffic signals, and visible injuries.
- Exchange driver's license, contact, and insurance information.
- Ask witnesses for their names and contact information.
- Keep copies of medical bills, treatment records, repair information, and documents showing missed work.
- Save emails, letters, texts, and other communications involving insurance companies.
- Be cautious about signing a release or settlement agreement before you understand how it could affect your claim.
Louisiana law requires immediate notice to the appropriate law-enforcement agency when a motor vehicle crash results in an injury, death, or more than $500 in property damage.
If you were injured while working, notify your employer as soon as possible. Louisiana workers' compensation law generally requires notice within 30 days after the injury or death, although other statutory provisions and exceptions may affect that requirement.
If your family lost someone because of an accident, separate rights and deadlines may apply. Our Hammond wrongful death attorneys can review the circumstances with eligible family members.
When Can a Hammond Injury Lawyer Help?
A claim can become difficult to manage when your injuries require ongoing treatment, fault is disputed, several people or companies may share responsibility, or an insurer questions the extent of your losses.
We can investigate what happened, review available evidence, identify potentially responsible parties, examine insurance coverage, communicate with insurers, and explain the legal options that may apply to your situation.
Certain accidents can involve additional layers of responsibility. An 18-wheeler crash may involve the driver, carrier, vehicle owner, maintenance provider, or more than one insurer. A workplace or industrial injury may raise questions involving an employer, contractor, property owner, or another business.
Our job is to help sort through those issues so you can make informed decisions about your claim.

How Long Do I Have to File an Injury Claim in Louisiana?
Louisiana limits how long you have to bring many personal injury claims.
Civil Code article 3493.1 generally provides a two-year prescriptive period for delictual actions beginning on the day the injury or damage is sustained. The provision became effective July 1, 2024.
Claims arising before that date and certain other types of actions may be subject to different deadlines. The correct period depends on the type of claim and when it arose, so you should not assume every case follows the same timeline.
If you are unsure how much time you have, we can review the circumstances with you.
What If I Was Partly at Fault?
Sharing some responsibility for an accident does not always mean you have no claim.
For claims governed by Louisiana Civil Code article 2323 as amended effective January 1, 2026, a person whose negligence is 51% or greater generally cannot recover damages. If the person's percentage of negligence is below 51%, recoverable damages are generally reduced according to that percentage. Louisiana’s modified comparative law also contains exceptions that may apply in certain situations.
That is one reason we look at the evidence rather than relying only on an initial police report, another driver's account, or an insurance company's assessment of fault.
