Cases We Handle in New Orleans
Home »
New Orleans and the surrounding metro are connected by heavily traveled routes such as I-10, I-610, US-90, and the Causeway Boulevard corridor. Our New Orleans personal injury lawyers represent people injured in crashes and other serious accidents throughout Orleans and Jefferson Parishes.
We handle car accident claims, commercial truck crashes, 18-wheeler accidents, and motorcycle wrecks. Big or small, I handle them all™. Depending on the crash, important evidence may include photographs, witness accounts, vehicle data, driver records, maintenance documents, and insurance information.
Our attorneys also help people injured at work. That includes workers' compensation claims and serious industrial and plant accidents.
New Orleans' location along the Mississippi River also makes maritime work an important part of the local economy. For qualifying injuries involving vessels, offshore work, or navigable waters, our offshore and maritime injury lawyers can review the circumstances and explain whether the Jones Act or another state or federal law may apply.

Courts Serving New Orleans and Nearby Communities
Where an injury lawsuit may be filed depends on factors such as where the accident occurred, where the parties are located, and Louisiana's jurisdiction and venue rules.
Orleans Parish is served by the Orleans Parish Civil District Court, located at 421 Loyola Avenue in New Orleans. The court has original jurisdiction over civil matters in Orleans Parish.
Because our New Orleans-area office is physically located in Metairie, Jefferson Parish is also important to the clients we serve. The 24th Judicial District Court has original jurisdiction over civil and criminal matters in Jefferson Parish and is located at 200 Derbigny Street in Gretna.
Not every personal injury claim will be filed in one of these courts. The appropriate court depends on the facts of the case and applicable jurisdiction and venue rules.
What to Do After an Accident in New Orleans
Your health and safety should come first. Seek medical attention when needed and notify law enforcement when Louisiana law requires it.
If you can do so safely:
- Take photos or video of the vehicles, damage, roadway, traffic controls, and visible injuries.
- Exchange contact and insurance information.
- Get names and contact information from witnesses.
- Keep medical records, bills, repair documents, and proof of missed work.
- Save letters, emails, and other communications from insurance companies.
- Be cautious about signing releases or settlement agreements before understanding how they may affect your claim.
Louisiana law requires immediate notice to the appropriate law-enforcement agency when a motor vehicle crash causes an injury, death, or more than $500 in property damage.
If you were injured while working, notify your employer as soon as possible. Louisiana workers' compensation law generally requires notice within 30 days of the injury, although exceptions may apply.
If an accident results in the death of a family member, different legal issues and deadlines may apply. Our New Orleans wrongful death attorneys can review the circumstances with eligible family members.
When Can a New Orleans Injury Lawyer Help?
Speaking with an attorney may be especially useful when injuries are serious, fault is disputed, several people or businesses may share responsibility, a commercial vehicle is involved, or an insurance company disputes coverage or damages.
A personal injury lawyer can review available evidence, identify potentially responsible parties and insurance coverage, communicate with insurers, and explain what compensation may be available under Louisiana law based on the circumstances of the claim.
Truck, workplace, industrial, and maritime accidents may involve additional companies, insurance policies, regulations, or legal issues. An attorney can help determine which of those factors are relevant to a particular case.

How Long Do I Have to File an Injury Claim in New Orleans, LA?
Louisiana places deadlines on personal injury claims.
Civil Code article 3493.1 generally provides a two-year prescriptive period for delictual actions beginning on the day the injury or damage is sustained. The provision became effective July 1, 2024.
Claims arising before that date and certain other types of cases can follow different deadlines. Because the applicable prescriptive period depends on the type and timing of the claim, it is important not to assume the general two-year period applies in every situation.
What If I Was Partly at Fault?
Fault after an accident is not always all-or-nothing.
Under Louisiana Civil Code article 2323, for claims governed by the law effective January 1, 2026, an injured person whose negligence is 51% or greater generally cannot recover damages. When an injured person's percentage of negligence is below 51%, recoverable damages are generally reduced according to that percentage.
Exceptions and other legal rules to Louisiana’s modified comparative law can affect individual cases, so responsibility should be evaluated based on the available evidence.
