An injury can disrupt your health, your job, and your family's routine. If you were hurt in Lafayette or elsewhere in Acadiana, our Lafayette personal injury lawyers can help you understand your rights and the options available under Louisiana law.
Our team handles car accident claims involving I-10, I-49, the Evangeline Thruway, Ambassador Caffery Parkway, and other busy roads throughout Lafayette Parish. We also represent people injured in commercial truck crashes, 18-wheeler accidents, and motorcycle wrecks. Big or small, I handle them all. ™
Acadiana is also home to oil and gas, industrial, construction, and maritime work. We help employees with workers' compensation claims and represent people injured in industrial and plant accidents.
If your job takes you offshore, aboard a vessel, or onto navigable waters, our offshore and maritime injury lawyers can review what happened and explain whether the Jones Act or another state or federal law may apply.

Courts Serving Lafayette and Acadiana
If your claim requires a lawsuit, where it may be filed depends on where the accident occurred, where the parties are located, and Louisiana's jurisdiction and venue rules.
Lafayette Parish is served by the 15th Judicial District Court. The district also serves Acadia and Vermilion Parishes, making it an important part of the court system throughout this part of Acadiana. Its Lafayette Parish courthouse is located on South Buchanan Street. The court has original jurisdiction over civil and criminal matters in the three parishes.
Lafayette City Court also handles certain civil matters within its territorial jurisdiction. That includes qualifying personal injury and general damage claims when the amount involved falls within the court's jurisdictional limit. The court's current published civil limit is $35,000.
You do not have to determine which court applies before contacting us. If litigation becomes necessary, we can review the circumstances and determine where your case may properly be filed.
What to Do After an Accident in Lafayette
Your health comes first. Get necessary medical care and report a motor vehicle crash to law enforcement when Louisiana law requires it.
If you can safely do so:
- Take photos or video of the vehicles, roadway, property damage, traffic signals, and visible injuries.
- Exchange contact and insurance information.
- Ask witnesses for their names and contact information.
- Keep medical bills, treatment records, repair documents, and records showing missed work.
- Save letters, emails, texts, and other communications involving insurance companies.
- Be careful about signing releases or settlement agreements before you understand how they could affect your claim.
If you were injured at work, report the accident to your employer as soon as possible. Louisiana workers' compensation law generally requires notice within 30 days of the injury, although exceptions may apply.
If your family lost someone because of an accident, different rights and deadlines may apply. Our Lafayette wrongful death attorneys can review what happened with eligible family members.
When Can a Lafayette Injury Lawyer Help?
You may want to speak with us when an accident causes significant injuries, fault is disputed, several people or businesses may be responsible, or an insurance company questions coverage or damages.
We can investigate available evidence, identify potentially responsible parties, review insurance coverage, communicate with insurers, and explain what legal options may be available based on your circumstances.
Some cases require a closer look at additional parties or laws. A commercial truck crash may involve a driver, trucking company, vehicle owner, maintenance provider, or several insurance policies. An oilfield or industrial injury may involve an employer, contractor, property owner, equipment manufacturer, or another business. Maritime cases can raise separate questions depending on your work, the vessel involved, and where the accident happened.
You do not need to sort through those issues before calling us. We can review the facts with you and explain what may apply.

How Long Do I Have to File an Injury Claim in Louisiana?
Louisiana places deadlines on personal injury claims.
Louisiana Civil Code article 3493.1 generally provides a two-year prescriptive period for delictual actions beginning on the day the injury or damage is sustained. The provision became effective July 1, 2024.
Claims arising before that date and certain other types of cases may follow different deadlines. Because the correct deadline depends on the type and timing of your claim, you should not assume that every injury case gives you two years.
If you are unsure how much time you have, we can review the circumstances with you.
What If I Was Partly at Fault?
You may still have questions about your rights if you believe you contributed to an accident.
For claims governed by Louisiana Civil Code article 2323 as amended effective January 1, 2026, a person whose negligence is 51% or greater generally cannot recover damages. If the person's percentage of negligence is below 51%, recoverable damages are generally reduced according to that percentage.
Other rules and exceptions to Louisiana’s modified comparative law may apply to a particular claim. We look at the evidence rather than relying only on an insurer's initial assessment of fault.
