Celebrating Juneteenth in Louisiana

Juneteenth, Celebrating Juneteenth in Louisiana

On April 12, 1861, Confederate troops fired on Fort Sumter in South Carolina, ushering in an era of violence and death in America. On January 1, 1863, three years into the war, President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, declaring that all enslaved people in Confederate-held territories were free. However, many enslaved individuals did not learn of their freedom until June 19, 1865.

As of June 19, 1865, there were more than 250,000 enslaved African Americans in Galveston Bay, Texas. When Union troops arrived that day, they announced by executive decree that all enslaved people were free. This would later be known as “Juneteenth”, a day dedicated to remembrance and celebration of freedom, resilience, and the ongoing journey toward equality.

In 2021, Juneteenth was officially recognized as a federal holiday when President Joe Biden signed it into law. Now each year on June 19th, communities across the country come together to honor Juneteenth through festivals, parades, storytelling, music, food, and acts of service. It’s a day that brings families, neighbors, and communities together in recognition of freedom and progress.
