Honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a federal holiday celebrating the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Dr. King, who devoted his life to peacefully protesting racial injustice at the state and federal levels, played a key role in the American Civil Rights Movement.

Inspired by his Christian beliefs and the activism of Mahatma Gandhi, Dr. King was noted for his nonviolent activism. King’s peaceful protest of racial injustice proved fundamental in the success of the Civil Rights Movement.

Dr. King led several peaceful protests throughout the 1960s, including the 1963 March on Washington where he delivered his “I Have a Dream” address to over 250,000 people. His speeches and writings continue to inspire people around the globe to fight for justice and equality.

Celebrated annually on the third Monday of January, Martin Luther King Jr. Day exists to honor Dr. King’s legacy. Although some progress has been made, there is still a long road ahead. Each year, this day offers us the time to reflect on the important work he devoted his life to and how we have to continue to strive for justice and equality.
