Fatal Accident Involving 18-Wheeler Forces Closure of Northbound I-49

A tragic truck accident unfolded on May 20th as an overturned 18-wheeler brought traffic to a standstill on I-49 Northbound near Pont Des Mouton. According to Lafayette Police, the catastrophic collision occurred when the massive commercial truck, traveling along I-49 N, struck an abandoned vehicle parked on the shoulder near East Butcher Switch Road.

The impact caused the 18-wheeler to veer out of control, ultimately exiting the roadway and finally coming to a halt at 3100 NE Evangeline Thruway, close to East Butcher Switch. Tragically, the driver of the 18-wheeler lost their life due to the crash, as confirmed by Lafayette Police authorities.

As reported by the Louisiana Department of Transportation, traffic quickly piled up, leading to severe congestion that stretched all the way to I-10. Currently, commuters and residents are advised to seek alternate routes and exercise caution when traveling through the affected area.

The investigation into what caused the collision is ongoing, with authorities working to determine the situation that led to this tragic accident.
