If you have been injured in Lake Charles or Southwest Louisiana, you may be dealing with medical treatment, missed work, insurance calls, and questions about what happens next. Our Lake Charles personal injury lawyers are here to help you understand your options.
Lake Charles is connected by heavily traveled routes such as I-10, I-210, US-171, and Ryan Street. We represent people injured in car accidents, commercial truck crashes, 18-wheeler wrecks, and motorcycle accidents throughout the area. Big or small, I handle them all™.
Work injuries are also an important concern in Southwest Louisiana. We help injured employees with workers' compensation claims and represent people hurt in serious industrial and plant accidents.
Lake Charles is also closely connected to marine and energy industries. The Port of Lake Charles manages the Calcasieu Ship Channel, a 68-mile commercial waterway connecting Lake Charles with the Gulf of Mexico. If your work takes you aboard vessels, offshore, or onto navigable waters, our offshore and maritime injury lawyers can review your circumstances and explain which laws may apply.

Courts Serving Lake Charles and Calcasieu Parish
If your claim requires a lawsuit, the proper court depends on where the accident occurred, where the parties are located, the amount involved, and Louisiana's jurisdiction and venue rules.
The 14th Judicial District Court serves Calcasieu Parish and has original jurisdiction over civil and criminal matters in the parish. Its courthouse is located at 1001 Lakeshore Drive in Lake Charles.
Lake Charles City Court, located at 118 West Mill Street, also handles certain civil disputes within Ward 3 of Calcasieu Parish. The court currently has authority over qualifying civil disputes involving up to $50,000.
Lake Charles is also home to the Louisiana Third Circuit Court of Appeal at 1000 Main Street. The Third Circuit's territory includes 21 parishes across Southwest and Central Louisiana, including Calcasieu and Cameron Parishes.
You do not need to determine where your case belongs before contacting us. If litigation becomes necessary, we can evaluate the facts and determine which court may have jurisdiction.
What to Do After an Accident in Lake Charles
Your health comes first. Seek medical attention when you need it and contact law enforcement when Louisiana law requires a crash to be reported.
If you are able to do so safely:
- Take photos or video of the vehicles, roadway, property damage, traffic controls, and visible injuries.
- Exchange contact and insurance information with the other driver.
- Get names and contact information from anyone who witnessed the accident.
- Keep medical records, bills, repair documents, and records showing time missed from work.
- Save letters, emails, texts, and other communications from insurance companies.
- Be careful about signing a release or settlement agreement before you understand what rights it may affect.
Louisiana law requires immediate notice to the appropriate law-enforcement agency when a motor vehicle crash causes an injury, death, or more than $500 in property damage.
If you were injured while working, notify your employer promptly. Louisiana workers' compensation law generally requires notice within 30 days after the injury or death, although other provisions and exceptions can affect that deadline.
If your family lost someone because of an accident, different rights and deadlines may apply. Our Lake Charles wrongful death attorneys can review what happened with eligible family members.
When Can a Lake Charles Injury Lawyer Help?
You may want to speak with us when an injury is serious, fault is disputed, several people or businesses may be responsible, or an insurance company questions your claim.
We can review available evidence, investigate how the accident happened, identify potentially responsible parties, examine available insurance coverage, communicate with insurers, and explain what legal options may be available.
Some Lake Charles-area cases can involve additional issues. A commercial truck wreck may involve a driver, trucking company, vehicle owner, maintenance provider, or several insurers. An industrial accident may involve an employer, contractor, equipment manufacturer, property owner, or another business. Maritime injuries can involve separate federal laws depending on your work and where the accident happened.
You do not need to sort through those questions on your own before calling us. We can review the circumstances with you.

How Long Do I Have to File an Injury Claim in Louisiana?
Louisiana sets deadlines for bringing injury claims.
Civil Code article 3493.1 generally provides a two-year prescriptive period for delictual actions beginning on the day the injury or damage is sustained. The provision became effective July 1, 2024.
Claims arising before that date and certain other types of claims may follow different deadlines. Because the applicable deadline depends on the type and timing of your claim, you should not assume every injury case gives you two years.
If you are unsure how much time you have, we can review the circumstances with you.
What If I Was Partly at Fault?
You may still have questions about your rights even if you believe you contributed to an accident.
For claims governed by Louisiana Civil Code article 2323 as amended effective January 1, 2026, a person whose negligence is 51% or greater generally cannot recover damages. If that person's percentage of negligence is below 51%, recoverable damages are generally reduced according to that percentage. Louisiana’s modified comparative law also contains exceptions that can apply in particular circumstances.
That is why we look at the available evidence rather than relying only on assumptions made at the scene or an insurer's initial position.
